Established to protect and display the military post that was built on this site in 1851, Fort Union National Monument preserves this important site of American history. Tour the ruins of the fort on either the short half-mile or longer 1.6 mile self-guided trails, which feature interpretive signs to help explain the various ruins. Throughout the summer there are a variety of ranger-led programs and walks that help illuminated the history of this site even further. Located along the long-abandoned Santa Fe Trail, the site is about 30 miles north of the town of Las Vegas, New Mexico.
